Lee Hurst

With over 25 years in tennis, first as a player and then as coach, Lee Hurst is recognized as one of the most effective developmental coaches in the US.

Hurst’s entry to tennis came quite late. After a successful soccer and track career he began playing at the age of 16 in the South of England. Driven by an intense energy and singular competitiveness he headed to the West Coast of Florida where he played and taught at the famed Saddle-brook Tennis Academy. After a few years of training as a practice partner and conditioning coach with top ATP players including Jimmy Brown, Ramesh Krishnan, Chris Garner and Mihnea Nastase,  he turned his efforts to teaching.

Hurst has been constantly developing a substantive methodology for teaching that gets the most out of his high performance programs and players. Hurst has developed a number of the best US Junior players & Division 1 College players consistently for more than 15 years now. Including Stanford, UCLA, Princeton, Gorgia Tech, Texas and many more. His students have won dozens of Gold balls & ITF’s and WTA/ATP tournaments.

Hurst’s acumen and productivity as a developmental coach were recognized by the USTA’s Patrick McEnroe and Jose Higueras in 2010 when they hired him as a Lead National Coach to open and run the USTA Player Development Program at the site of the US OPEN. In under a year Hurst helped create two national champions and was able to attract a number of world ranked women who continue train at the center.

During his time with the USTA Hurst began formalizing his teaching philosophy. He created an taught assistant coaches an effective assessment system for stroke production that enables a progressive method of teaching, as well as training materials for other coaches to organize practices. After a time in this position, Hurst realized he could more freely pursue the development of his ideas outside the USTA.

At the USTA training center Hurst met and worked with Wimbledon Semi-Finalist and former Top-ten player Tim Mayotte.  There they discussed a dream of creating one of the best tennis training programs in the world. With MHST they are working towards this in a systematic manner, and are currently putting together and training a staff that can deliver the best program anywhere.
